The volatile butterfly painting Papilio glaucus

Part of Luxurious butterflies and moths artworks collection.

850 $

The volatile butterfly painting Papilio glaucus (Tiger swallowtail) was surprising. Butterflies with flat, uncomplicated, patternless wings are a big challenge for me. How to paint them so that they are not boring? Will they be interesting? Often these seemingly simple, unadorned wings turn out to be very interesting.

Currently at the Leeds Playhouse Summer Group Exhibition 2022 (UK).

A spot of colour emerges from the emptiness of the paper, it is not flat, it is full of small nuances, and it is bold and resolute.
In the case of the Papilio glaucous painting, the two dominant colors are light, whitened yellow, and very dark, shimmering navy blue, with few red details adding to the overall flavour. This painting surprised me a lot, it became one of my favourites. Its simplicity creates an extremely calm, reflective atmosphere.
