Intense, contemporary painting of a butterfly “Hesperis numberwing” is inspired by the contrasting, strong wings of the Callicore hesperis butterfly. When I started painting a series of butterfly-inspired paintings, I thought I would use many bright colours. Unexpectedly, the pastels that I buy most often are deep, dark blues, violets, purples, blacks, and browns. The Callicore hesperis butterfly is an excellent example of such a palette. Its wings shine with intense, cold yellow and huge patches of red; those patches of colour are surrounded by greenish grays and blacks. To emphasize the colours and add drama, the whole composition is hung on a matte black background. The red and the yellow shine like street lights on a dark, starless night.
This painting will perfectly complement any modern interior. Although inspired by nature, it is very geometric. It oozes intensity and simplicity at the same time.
Its colours and shapes, and the mood it evokes, are far from the romantic image of meadows and butterflies. They bring to mind cityscapes, modern buildings and neons, with a hint of raw, primitive art.
